New Zealand political compass

Where do you really stand?

Gidday. Politics can feel like a maze. Answer a short set of statements and we'll plot exactly where your views sit on a political compass built for Aotearoa New Zealand. No jargon, no judgement.

Give it a go →

We build aggregated, anonymous reports from survey answers, some public, some private. We never sell or share your raw answers. Read our privacy policy for the details.

Easy as. Here's the deal:

01

Answer the questions

A series of statements. Just choose how much you agree or disagree. No wrong answers, just your honest opinion.

02

Watch your position move

Every answer nudges your dot on the compass, live, so you can see how each issue shapes where you land.

03

See who you're near

The party dots are there all along, but unnamed: who is who is revealed once your own position has settled. Then share it, or start a good kōrero (conversation).

Our kaupapa

What's the big idea, then?

KiwiValues is a passion project, built right here in Aotearoa, largely run by one person, with feedback and ideas from many along the way.

The goal is simple: a useful, non-judgemental tool to help you explore your own views. It's not about putting you in a box, it's about giving you a new perspective.

Common questions

Is this the same as Vote Compass?

No. Vote Compass and the other election quizzes match your answers against what each party has promised. KiwiValues places you among people: your answers are compared with those of other New Zealanders, and each party's dot is the average position of the respondents who vote for it. Read how it works for the details.

How is it different from the original Political Compass?

The statements are written for New Zealand, so they cover the Treaty, housing, tax and the things Kiwis actually argue about. The two axes aren't fixed in advance either: they come from how respondents here answered, which is why the left-right axis blends economic and social views rather than being purely economic.

How long does it take?

Around ten minutes. There are 69 statements, and you can skip any you'd rather not answer. Your dot moves as you go, so you don't have to wait until the end to see where you're heading.

Is it free and anonymous?

Yes. No sign-up, no cost, and we don't collect anything that identifies you. We publish aggregated research from the answers, never anyone's raw responses. The privacy policy has the specifics.
